36th Birthday

I had such a great time, it was the greatest birthday of my life. I turned 36!

I awoke to see birthday messages on my phone from my family and friends. My birthday plans were already set a few days before. I was really excited about this day.

In the afternoon, I went to town to buy a dress for tonight and some baking stuff. Then I went home and changed into the dress I bought. After that, I jumped in a taxi to go to the theatre with Luca, who had bought me a special birthday gift to see the musical comedy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrel. We enjoyed the story and laughed a lot! I saw a lot of visual comedy in the musical, which was a bit surprising because I thought English comedy was more based on language, rather than visual humour.

It was gone 10 pm when the show ended. We moved to his house, then we had cranberry juice with Cointreau. Luca and his housemate sang Happy Birthday as they brought a birthday cookie cake, which was Millie’s cookie cake with messages written on it in icing! I was so moved by the surprise cookie. What a wonderful birthday in a foreign country where I just came four months ago.

Since my school started, I have met a lot of students. I really thank them for everything they’ve done for me. If I had not met them, my stay in the UK would be totally different.

The First Week

My first week of grad school was really busy with socialising. Although I got a long reading list for my classes, my schedule last week was full to capacity with appointments with new friends.

On Tuesday evening, my British friend living in Birmingham came and stayed with me until Friday. For four days, we went sightseeing to see the castle, the cathedral, local shops and an art gallery. At night we had dinner parties with my flatmates. I really enjoyed walking all around the town, because I hadn’t been to many of them before.

The following day, my Japanese friends asked me to go to a sports pub to watch football and have lunch together. We went into town and spent the afternoon watching it, chatting, and drinking while I was thinking about my reading in my mind.

Finally, I started studying on Sunday morning. I scanned five books quickly and made notes for the classes. It was an astonishingly quick job.
